BNE agent shot in San Diego
-- Suspect killed after fleeing
A California Department of Justice Special Agent from the Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement (BNE) is recuperating at a San Diego hospital after being shot in the abdomen Saturday night while trying to apprehend a suspected gang member who – according to the San Diego Union Tribune – had just emerged from an apartment where he and an alleged accomplice shot six people, killing one of them.
DOJ Special Agents from the Riverside and San Diego BNE offices were conducting a joint gang investigation in the San Diego area at the time. BNE Special Agent Supervisor Paul Roberts and a colleague approached the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to make an arrest, but the suspect opened fire, hitting Roberts in the stomach, before fleeing on foot.
The suspect, described only as 41-year-old man, was pursued by officers from the San Diego Police Department, who shot and killed the suspect after a second round of gunfire ensued.
Jim Vitko, president of the Association of Special Agents-Department of Justice (ASA-DOJ), visited Roberts at UCSD Hospital in the Hillcrest area of San Diego, and reports that the agent is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.
According to the Union-Tribune, “Police said the driver of the getaway vehicle, Tri Vo, 23, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The shooting and the investigation that followed clogged the freeway for hours. The California Highway Patrol opened the University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard on-ramps to Interstate 805 in both directions Sunday morning after they had been closed through the night.”
